After starting a business, the next logical step is to figure out a way to grow it. Growing your business starts with setting the right goals. In this post, you’ll find three essential goals for a new business.
As a new business owner, it’s easy to get distracted or bogged down with lots of tasks or activities that don’t move the needle in your business. That’s why it’s so important to prioritize certain tasks and to understand what your growth drivers are.
You need to spend most of your time, energy, and resources on the right or most profitable tasks. Based on my experience and what I have learned, here are the top three goals or priorities I believe a new business should focus on.
GOAL #1 GENERATE REVENUE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE
One of the most important goals for a new business is to set some revenue goals.
One of your top priorities as a new business owner is to start earning income as soon as possible. This will help you stay motivated and also keep your business running. Business expenses can pile up, so the sooner you get some money coming in, the better for you.
Get clear about your offerings and the best prices to sell them. Figure out how to attract customers and generate sales. Identify other potential sources of income and design a revenue model for your business.
Making money should be a priority for your business. You can have multiple revenue streams or sources in your business, so choose your revenue streams and figure out how to grow them.
GOAL #2 FIND THE MOST EFFECTIVE MARKETING STRATEGIES
Setting revenue goals is important, but what is even more important is your strategy or plan to achieve your revenue goals.
You need customers to purchase your products or services to generate revenue, but first, you need a way to attract or find those customers. That means you need to focus on finding the most effective marketing strategies for your business.
Finding the most effective strategies starts with creating a marketing plan and setting marketing goals. Additionally, you need to keep track of your marketing activities so you can identify what is working.
To get better at marketing or to become an effective marketer, try to do one marketing task every day. Keep learning and perfecting your strategy.
And, don’t forget that you also need a marketing budget to help you execute your marketing plan or strategy. Your budget doesn’t have to be big. You can start with whatever you can afford and increase it as your business starts generating more revenue or profit.
Customer acquisition is your number one task as a business owner. In the first weeks or months of your business, your focus should be on getting your first customers and sales.
GOAL #3 IDENTIFY AND MEET THE NEEDS OF YOUR CUSTOMERS
The third essential new business goal you can set is to identify and meet the needs of your customers.
Your business should solve a problem for a specific group of people., so one of your main priorities should be to identify the needs and pain points of your target audience and work to meet those needs.
As a new business owner, your first customers are very crucial for gaining momentum. If you can retain your first customers or turn them into repeat or loyal customers, you will be in much better shape than lots of new business owners.
Meeting the needs of your customers can only happen if you find out what your target audience or customers need.
After you discover or identify what they need, create products or services to meet your customers’ needs or tweak your existing products. Always keep a running list of product ideas you think will help your customers, so you can keep meeting their needs.
And, remember to always provide great customer service to keep your customers loyal.
New business goals should focus on what will have the biggest effect on your business and what will help you become more stable.
Don’t set goals in a vacuum. Always look at the big picture and how a particular goal will affect your business. Additionally, remember that the most important part of setting goals is taking action or implementation.
Prioritize implementation over learning. Action is what will grow your business and not how much you know.
